Summary of Unit

Students will learn important events that lead to the allies’ success in World War II in both the European and Asian front. They will create a timeline of major events that shows their understanding of the events. They will learn how cou7ntries like the United States and Germany were directly affected by the war both during and after. In doing so they will see how the results of WWII affected future events. Students will understand that WWII had major consequences for many people throughout the world. They will realize that the Jewish people were not the only people largely affected by the war. Students will be given an identity of a person in WWII and write a blog on how events might have affected them. Students will be able to look back at past events and analyze how they could happen again and ways to prevent it using a digital presentation. By the end of this unit students will be able to relate to events in WWII. They will know and understand the connection between WWII and the Iraq war and other events that are currently happening.

•Why were there major consequences of WWII?
•How did the allies win WWII?

Students will know...
•Important events and people: Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Hitler, MacArthur, Roosevelt, Churchill, Mussolini, Hideki Tojo
•Critical Details: Holocaust and Aryanization, Japanese hatred for U.S.
•Sequences and Time lines: Allies involvement, Axis power conquering countries and major battles.

Students will be able to...
•Demonstrate the knowledge of the U.S. involvement in WWII.
•Critique axis powers involvement in other countries during WWII.
•Exhibit knowledge of major events and important people of WWII.
•b. Analyze major historical eras (WWII), major enduring themes, turning points, events, consequences, and people in the history of the United States and world and the implications for the present and future.
•Consider life during and after WWII.
•Recognize how lives were effected during WWII.
Performance Task:
Students will create a movie on an event of WWII.
Students will find a similar event that has happened again or create a new scenario and present that to the class.
Students will present a solution to stopping that event before another world war can happen again.


Expectations

Attendance:
Students are required to attend all classes. Not attending class will effect class participation points. If a student is absent then they have a week after the absents to make up all missed homework and class assignments. Completing all missed work (both class and homework) will keep them from loosing participation points. I will make time available after school to make up this work. If class is canceled assigned homework will be due the following class.
Homework:
Homework assignments are expected to be turned in on. Students that do not complete a homework assignment will lose 10 points for everyday it is late. As stated above students that are absent have a week to complete missed assignments. Students will keep a copy of all homework assignments in a folder in the classroom so that they have references of completed homework.
School Polices:
Students are expected to follow all school polices in the classroom. Failure to do so can result in being sent to the office or a detention.


Benchmarks

The WWII unit will be based on 350 points total
Homework: (20 points) Students will bring in their complete homework, which will be a variety of reading assignments with questions and worksheets. Completion of homework will help with class assignments the following class. This will also include essays and prompts. Each homework assignment will be worth 5 points
Quizzes/ Tests: (50 points) Students will be given quizzes through out the unit. Each quiz will be work 10 points. A test will be given at the end unit. It will be comprised of different information they have discovered throughout the unit. The test will be worth (20 points)
Class Work: (120 points) Students will have to complete a timeline, PowerPoint, Contribution to the class wiki, debate, WebQuest, and Blogs. Each of these assignments will be worth 20 points. They will be worked on in class. Students will also have a chance to complete these assignments for homework if they are not finished in class.
Performance Task: (160 points) Students will have a final project (performance task) for the unit. This includes a student created movie and a presentation. The movie will be worth 100 points and the presentation will be worth 60 points.
